Weymouth: A Rich History, a Bright Future

Weymouth is the second-oldest settlement in Massachusetts, behind Plymouth. It was called Wessagusset Colony, and was first settled in 1622 by Thomas Weston, a major financial backer of Plymouth Colony. But the 60 men who settled here were not prepared or equipped to handle survival, much less building a community, and the result was disastrous as 10 of them died of starvation and others died in conflict with the local indigenous peoples. Soon, the settlement was abandoned as some moved to Plymouth Colony, some moved north to what is now Maine, and others returned to England.

Fortunately, that rough start wasn’t the end of Weymouth’s history. The area was incorporated into the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630, and, despite some conflicts between the Puritans and other settlers, the town became established and prospered.

For much of its history, up until 1937, Weymouth was a hub for the shoemaking industry. Today, it is a prosperous suburb and has the 10th-largest Irish-American population in the United States.

Notable natives and residents include:

• Abigail Adams, the wife of John Adams, second President of the United States, and mother to John Adams, the sixth president.
• Booker T. Washington, an author, educator, and orator who was born into slavery and became a leader of the Black community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
• Frank Lloyd Wright, the architect who revolutionized the look and function of American homes with his Prairie and Usonian styles.
• Hal Holbrook, an actor who won a Tony Award for his portrayal of Mark Twain, won multiple Emmy Awards for his television work, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2008 for his work on Into the Wild.
• Ralph Talbot, the first Marine Corps aviator to earn a Medal of Honor for his piloting during World War I. He died when the plane he was testing crashed during takeoff, just a few weeks before the Armistice that ended the war was signed.
• Marcy Carsey, a television writer and producer who developed or produced classic television shows including Happy Days, Mork & Mindy, Soap, The Cosby Show, Roseanne, That 70’s Show, A Different World, and 3rd Rock From the Sun.
• Mark Shields, a political advisor, columnist, and commentator. He worked on Democratic presidential campaigns for Robert F. Kennedy, Edmund Muskie, and Morris Udall and became a regular commentator on PBS NewsHour.
