Heating System Troubleshooting

Is your heat not working? We can help!

There’s no feeling quite like when you realize that your home’s furnace or boiler has conked out during cold weather. You worry about your home becoming uncomfortably cold, your pipes freezing and the prospect of a repair bill.

Atlantic-Pratt is here to help you! In addition to offering 24/7 no-heat emergency service, we have also assembled some steps you can take before you call us. You may be able to get your heating system running again without the hassle and expense of a service call!

No heat? Here’s what to do!

  1. Check your thermostat: Ensure that your thermostat is set at least 5˚ higher than the current room temperature. Confirm that the thermostat is set to the “heat” mode. Verify that the batteries are still functional (install new batteries, if necessary). If the heat hasn’t kicked on after doing these steps, proceed to the next step.
  2. Check the heating system switch: The switch should be set to “ON.” If it’s not, turn it on and if nothing happens, call us.
  3. Check your heating oil tank gauge: If your heating oil tank is less than 15% full, call us RIGHT AWAY to schedule an emergency delivery.
  4. Check the circuit breaker: Common causes of a malfunctioning heating system include tripped circuit breakers. If you find that the circuit breaker for your heating system has been tripped, simply switch it back on. If it hasn’t been tripped, proceed to the next troubleshooting step.
  5. Inspect the air filter: A blocked air filter in your furnace can lead to system shutdown. If this is the case, make sure to replace it. Otherwise, proceed to the final step. Set a reminder on your phone or calendar to regularly check your air filter, especially if you have pets or someone in your household with respiratory issues, such as asthma or COPD. By doing so, you’ll ensure optimal performance and maintain a healthy living environment.
  6. Push and hold the reset button for 30 seconds: Please note that this step should only be performed once. Repeating it can potentially damage your heating system and lead to additional costlier repairs. If this troubleshooting step does not resolve the issue, please reach out to us for a no-heat emergency service call.
