Before Europeans arrived, the area that is now Quincy held a trail traveled by the local indigenous peoples and land where Sachem Chickatawbut resided. Plymouth Colony commander Myles Standish and his indigenous guide, Squanto, visited in 1621, soon after the Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth.
A post was established nearby four years later, and settlers moved in to farm the land earlier cleared by Chickatawbut. The community was incorporated as part of Dorchester in 1630 and later became a part of Braintree. It became its own town following the American Revolution.
Quincy’s economy grew with a granite quarry and stonecutting. It also became a part of educational history as the Quincy Method of education was created here by superintendent Francis W. Parker. The Quincy Method moved away from rigid, rote learning and became more student-focused.
Shipbuilding was a major part of Quincy’s history, as it was where major warships such as aircraft carriers and battleships were built.
