Milton: A History that Goes Way Back

While the Milton of today is a bustling Boston suburb, its history can be traced back thousands and thousands of years!

The Fowl Meadows Paleoamerican Archeological Site here has carbon-dated charcoal remains from more than 12,100 years ago. The area remained occupied by indigenous peoples until the early 17th century, when European settlers arrived. The first grist mill in the Colonies was built here in 1634, and the shipbuilding industry was established here less than 10 years later.

Milton, which had previously been part of Dorchester, was incorporated in 1662. After the American Revolution, the town became prosperous, thanks to the China Trade and the Industrial Revolution. Many wealthy Bostonians chose to settle here, with land available to build large estates.

Milton is where President George H.W. Bush was born in 1924. In an interesting twist of fate, he was born on Adams Street, which was named for presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams. Bush and his son, George W. Bush, followed in their footsteps as the second father-son presidency duo.

Notable natives and residents of Milton include:

• T.S. Eliot, a poet, playwright, and essayist, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1948. His best-known works include The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, Portrait of a Lady, Four Quartets, and The Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, which was later adapted by Andrew Lloyd Weber into the smash Broadway musical, Cats.
• Howard Deering Johnson, a businessman who founded the Howard Johnson chain of motels and restaurants.
• Jordan Knight, lead singer of the boy band New Kids on the Block.
• Luis Tiant, a Cuban-American baseball pitcher with a standout windup who played for the Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians. He was beloved by Red Sox fans, who called him El Tiante, in no small part thanks to his role in helping the Red Sox reach the World Series in 1975.
• Jenny Slate, an actress, stand-up comic, and screenwriter who was a cast member on Saturday Night Live and appeared in films including Everything Everywhere All at Once, Obvious Child, and The Secret Life of Pets.
• Ken Casey, bassist and co-lead singer of the Celtic-punk band Dropkick Murphys.
• Deval Patrick, who served as Governor of Massachusetts from 2007-2015. He had previously served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney General in the Civil Rights Division during the Clinton Administration.
• William Ralph Emerson, an architect who was well known for his Shingle Style homes and commercial properties. He was also a cousin of Ralph Waldo Emerson.
