What is Heating Oil?

Discover the benefits of today’s eco-friendly home heating oil

heating oil massachusetts You may have heard in the news recently about Massachusetts utility regulators ruling in favor of reducing our state’s dependence on natural gas, but what if you use heating oil for your home? Learn more about this workhorse that keeps South Shore homes warm and toasty.

Where heating oil comes from

In the 1840s, crude oil was distilled to make kerosene, which was used to light lanterns. Soon after, the first oil burner was developed to enable oil to heat indoor spaces. By the 1930s, heating oil was a common fuel throughout the entire Northeast. It became an attractive alternative to wood- and coal-fired stoves because it featured easier storage, less work, more efficient heat production and better safety (since heating oil is non-explosive in its liquid state).

The primary type of oil produced for residential homes became known as “Number 2 heating oil” and was dyed red in order to distinguish it from on-road diesel fuel, which is subject to a federal excise tax that home heating oil is exempt from.

How home heating oil has changed

In more recent years, the amount of sulfur in heating oil was reduced in order to lower emissions and improve heating system performance. By 2018, Massachusetts and all other New England states had transitioned to ultra-low sulfur heating oil — representing a 99% reduction in sulfur levels compared to three decades ago and a 70% reduction in overall greenhouse gas emissions.

And the development of Bioheat® fuel — an exceptional blend of ultra-low sulfur heating oil and biodiesel — has been a game-changer. We’re proud to offer customers in Weymouth and throughout the South Shore the many benefits of this eco-friendly fuel to heat their homes.

The advantages of Bioheat fuel

Biodiesel comes from natural and renewable resources such as plant oils (including soybean, hemp, pumpkin, sunflower, rapeseed and inedible corn), animal fats and tallows, algae, and recycled restaurant cooking oils and fats. Combining biodiesel with ultra-low sulfur heating oil produces a cleaner, more efficient alternative to Number 2 heating oil.

By choosing Bioheat fuel for your home heating system, you can save money and help the environment at the same time through:

The best part is, you don’t have to do anything at all to switch to Bioheat fuel if you already use oil to heat your home.

Today’s high-efficiency heating oil systems

Modern oil heating systems are much more efficient than in the past. Compared to a few decades ago, they use around 700 fewer gallons of heating oil each year. And newer models of oil tanks feature leak-resistant construction and can be located with more flexibility in smaller spaces.

If you’re looking to replace your home’s heating oil tank , we can help you choose the right tank to suit your needs, remove the old one and install the new one for you. You can also count on us for expert oil burner servicing and maintenance to keep your new system in top condition over its lifetime.

Or maybe you’re thinking of converting your heating system from natural gas to heating oil. It’s a smart move based on the recent regulatory changes, plus heating oil produces more energy than natural gas. And because heating oil for your system is stored right on your own property, you’re not at the mercy of a local utility company when there are problems with a natural gas pipeline.
