Three Myths About Diesel — Debunked

Today’s diesel is cleaner and more efficient than ever before.

diesel Plymouth County, MAWhen you manage a vehicle fleet, a marina, a work site that uses heavy equipment or a farming operation, diesel fuel can be an absolute necessity. This versatile fuel keeps trucks on the road, generators powered, construction operations moving and planting and harvesting on schedule — to name a few of diesel’s diverse uses.

At Atlantic Pratt Oil, we’re proud to deliver premium-quality on-road and off-road diesel to a wide range of commercial clients. In this article, we want to address three persistent — and inaccurate — myths you might have heard about this fuel.

Is Diesel Dirty?

What You Might Have Heard: Some people claim that diesel engines are bad for air quality and the environment.
The Facts: The Environmental Protection Agency has implemented stricter emissions standards, prompting diesel producers to make significant strides in reducing pollution. Today’s diesel engines are equipped with advanced Diesel Particulate Filters, capable of eliminating 95% of smoke particles. Furthermore, all diesel fuel sold in the U.S. is now ultra-low-sulfur, containing a maximum of just 15 parts per million (ppm) — a dramatic improvement from the previous levels.

Are Diesel Vehicles Inefficient?

What You Might Have Heard: Some believe diesel is not an energy-efficient way to power your vehicles and other equipment.
The Facts: Diesel is one of the most popular transportation fuels, in large part because diesel engines are more fuel-efficient and deliver greater low-end torque than comparable gasoline engines. The reason is that diesel contains 10% to 15% more energy than gasoline. The result? Diesel vehicles can travel 20% to 35% farther on a gallon of fuel compared to gas vehicles, and that’s before factoring in the high-performance additives in many of today’s premium diesel products.

Is All Diesel Made from Crude Oil?

What You Might Have Heard: Some claim diesel is dependent on foreign oil markets and is 100% petroleum.
The Facts: Today, there are many different kinds of diesel fuel. Much of it is still a distillate of crude oil, but more and more comes from renewable, eco-friendly processes. Here are some examples:

There are hundreds of biorefineries across the U.S. producing billions of gallons of biodiesel and renewable diesel every year.
